Just home form an Amazing UK tour

The Foghorn Stringband just returned home from an eventful five week tour of Scotland, England, Denmark, Belgium and the happy city of Amsterdam.   We set out on April 27th for the Infamous Shetland Island Folk Festival.  The journey there was epic.  The last leg of the trip to Shetland was on a 12 hour ferry ride, overnight, and full of musicians.  We played almost the entire ride.  I think I slept three hours.  We spent five days in Shetland,  with very little sleep, but we met some of the finest musicians a made some great new local friends.  We will go back soon.
The next four weeks found us traveling to Amsterdam, Denmark, Belgium and England before heading back to Scotland for the Orkney Folk Festival.
Our adventures were filled with surprises,  like the gypsy party out in the far reaches of Christiania, Denmark.  We even played for them. We found a pig roast, 40th birthday party, out in the country in Stroud, England.  We played for them.
We stayed with our friends Martin and Inga in Edinburgh,  and then we all traveled up to the Orkney's for the perfect tour finale.  We climbed through windows and stole flags.  (we returned them)  we participated in the annual Orkney versus visitors football match.  We won!!!
Thanks to everyone who made this trip so amazing.  we love you all.

A look ahead to February

Tuesdays at the Edgefield are happening. I will be playing with Josh Rabie of the Water Tower Bucket Boys. I am real excited to be playing with Josh, he is a great fiddler in the bluegrass and old time tradition. He's wild and crazy too.

The Moon on sundays is happening. Each week will be a slightly different lineup, we have a few rotating guests on the fiddle, I might even make a fiddle appearance.

I am sitting in the studio right now mixing the final tracks for my new album which I hope to have out soon.  I am looking at doing a CD release show in late April or maybe June.  I'll keep you posted on that.

The Helsinki Invasion

Friends,
On Tuesday Sept 8th some great friends from Helsinki will be arriving in Portland. We have set up a few shows in the Northwest so check the calendar for details. Ninni and Mika are a duet that I met in Finland while working with Dirk Powell. We were part of a show in Helsinki that featured Jukka Karjalainen, with Ninni and Mika making it a trio. Ninni and Mika have been recording at Levon Helm's studio in Woodstock New York over the past few years and they are back in the US again this September. Their music ranges from traditional Finnish songs to modern country and folk songs to old time and country fiddling. Both Ninni and Mika have solo records out and both are a part of Helsinki's well known Hoedown Club, band. Sammy and I have been featured with Hoedown Club along with Jukka and other visiting artists like Martha Scanlan. Ninni and Mika have been a huge inspiration to me as far as bringing different worlds and talents together. I am very excited to have them visiting in Portland and Seattle for their first time. Please help me make them welcome, lets show them a good time.

Home again Home again Jiggity jig

We just had a great tour out in the Midwest with the Country Band. Chicago, you brought it all home. Thanks!! And to everyone we met out on the road, thank you for your energy and support. Your cheers are still ringing strong way out here in the west. Dayton, you are small but Mighty, thank you. Lafayette, thank you for Hazel, and to the Woodstove boys, you have it going on. Chicago, you were the loudest and most excited, ahhh it keeps the fire burning. Viroqua, we couldn;t have asked for a better dance. Thank you Tim Foss. Madison you kept us up late, we should have recorded a live record there. Thanks a million to you all.
We drove our trusty van (nicknamed the Gospel Ship because we have the Carter Family stenciled on the front hood) all the way out to Chicago. She drove fine for Sammy and Nadine as they moved across the western plains but we ran into trouble, in the heat of the Midwest, as the rest of us piled in and loaded her down. Overheating means no AC, and in a van full of musicians that can be trouble. But hey we are tough, we don't complain, we just do what we can and move on down the road to the next show. Well thats all good until the muffler starts dragging (you all have some rough roads). Driving in the country, on dirt roads, does not help the matter. We ended up tying the muffler to the van with guitar strings. It actually works, so good in fact that one of the brackets that was welded to the van to which we tied the muffler broke off. Thank you Martin Guitar Strings. We found a fine muffler shop in Madison Wi. and got her all fixed up nice.
So we are home again and awaiting Sammy and Nadine to bring in the ship safely to the dock and we will clean her up for the next adventure. Do you wanna be a part of it? Stay in touch and find out when we are headed your way soon.

Lonesome Song, The Foghorn Duo Album

Stephen "Sammy" Lind and I have produced a duo CD called Lonesome Song. (Thank you Sarah And Maybelle) The album is a good cross section of the music that we have been playing together since 2001, both with and without Foghorn. It was hard to fit everything that we like onto this recording, but hey, that just leaves us room to make another one. It's kind of like a cell phone or a computer, upgrade! upgrade! New! Improved!
Brian Bagdonas at Stumptown Printers is responsible for the the cover and Billy Oskay at Big Red Studios is responsible for the Sound. The CD is available at CD Baby, County Sales, and Elderly Music.

Mission Theatre, Portland OR. April 26th

The Caleb Klauder band is kicking off the Lewi Longmire CD release party on Saturday April 26th. don't be late.

Well you might know that I just returned home form a month long trip abroad. The country band took Denmark by storm, or should I say Jesse did. We kicked off the 30th birthday party for the infamous bar Woodstock. Woodstock is located in Cristiania, a squat community in Copenhagen. Some call the bar the end of the world. I relate it more to birthing and death, they are both so similar, from Woodstocks you can go anywhere. Its all like a big circle no matter how you look at it. What comes around goes around.

Anyways, as I was saying, Denmark. We will be heading back to Denmark for the Tonder music festival in August 2008. If you can make it there you will get a taste of Denmark all wrapped into one, we are looking forward to seeing lots of friends there.

Sammy and I took our first leap with a Foghorn Duo tour of Ireland and found ourselves in new and inviting places, Thanks to the Mighty Declan McCarthy. We were raided by the police in Ramelton, at 2:30 am, in the middle of a shut in. The funny thing was that we had all of the window shades open and the music blasting so it wasn't really a shut in. The cops raided and everybody laughed and then we all went home. Now thats the way it should always be. (if your going to get raided)

Sammy and I also made it to Finland, where we were hosted by the best. Mikka and Ninni housed us, and Jukka Karjalainen took us under his wing as band members for the week. We played four shows with the Lannen Jukka Stringband, trading off between our set and their set and then all joining together for a finale. We should have been called the Salmiaki Cowboys, as we drank enough of it to make us turn blue. (they say it can happen) Thanks to the Hoedown club for hosting us on the last evening of our trip. We were guests of honor at their once a month show, and we featured songs form the new CD Dangerous Mes and Poisonous Yous. Thank you Hoedown!!!!!!!!!

For Now.........

Denmark Tour and Finland too....

Alright folks we are gearing up for a tour of Denmark in mid February 2008. Myself, Sammy, Ned, Paul and Jesse will be playing songs from the new record and other classsic and forgotten songs of country music. The most excellent Eugene Graham of CEOL concerts is booking us for this tour, so we are sure to have a good time. Get your plane tickets now, and we'll see you there. I will be updating this as the shows are finalized.

After Denmark, Sammy Lind and I are jumping over to Helsinki to meet up with the Lannen Jukka Stringband for a week of music and more wintery fun. We'll see if the Vodka can keep us warm.

Finland, and Denmark's Tonder music Festival

Wow! Tonder. What a festival. Sammy Lind and I spent the weekend playing with Dirk Powell and The Balfa Toujours in Denmark for three nights of sessions and performances. Sammy Played Electric bass and I played drums for the canjun electric set. Sammy lays it down, you all have got to hear it. Kevin Wimmer and Courtney Granger played fiddles, Chritine Balfa played guitar and Dirk played accordion, it's like family, so good. We ended up having some great singing and old time sessions and the list of people that were there is too long for me to rattle of, but I tell you it was a treat. One highlight was warming the tune "Riley and Spencer" and having Taj Mahal belting it out right there with us. Dude was feeling it.

The Dirk Powell band also spent three days in Helsinki for a few great shows with the Finnish group Lannen Jukka. We were hosted like kings and heard some great music as well. Thank You Ninni and Mika for showing us all the sights. Manala! We spent three late nights in the local musicians hangout Manala, which means "the devils place" or, "Hell". I guess we fit in, playing all this "devils music". Helsinki is a beautiful city, you all should check it out.

For this trip, the Dirk Powell band was Riley Baugus on banjo, Dirk and Sammy on fiddles and me on guitar. Riley you are an amazing singer, and a fine Banjo player too.

Ok Its back to Portland. I have to get this new record released and have a cd release show. I have to round up the musicians.

I hope you all have been enjoying the songs, cause I like singing and playing them.

Cheers!
